本書は、是恒が東北やアラスカなど各地でフィールドワークするなかで出会った、鯨にまつわる文化や物語を集め、刺繍作品とともに収録したリトルプレス『ありふれたくじら』の第1号から第5号をあわせ、再編集したもの。
風に乗って運ばれてくる鯨の匂い、鯨の油であげたかりんとう、鯨を神さまとして祀った石碑、町の象徴だった捕鯨船、鯨の内臓膜とセイウチの牙を使ってつくったドラム、狩りの結果を予言するダンス、おじいさんがつくった古式捕鯨の鯨舟、大漁を祝って拵えられた着物に描かれた鯨――。
網走、石巻、三浦半島、和歌山、アラスカなど、世界各地の人びとの暮らしに息づく「ありふれたくじら」のはなし。
ささやかで力強い人びとの営みから見える鯨の姿は、大きな歴史の流れや捕鯨の是非をめぐる議論、“スーパー・ホエール”のような超現実的な鯨のイメージとは、異なる印象を与えてくれます。
「ちりぢりになった布きれを縫い合わせ、刺繍をほどこし美しく生まれ変わらせるように、世界にちらばり時に諍いの元となる鯨にまつわる物語を集め、そのイメージを作り直すこともできるのではないか。本書では、さまざまな土地に暮らす人たちにとっての鯨の話を尋ねてまわる。そうして綴った物語に刺繍を添えて、本を編む。やがては一枚のパッチワーク・キルトのように、本書がまだ見ぬ鯨のイメージとなり、世界を包むことができるように。」

A Collection of Works by Artist Sakura Koretsune,who explores the relationships between humans and cetaceans, as well as maritime folklore, through fieldwork conducted across Japan and abroad. Her findings take shape in essays, poetry, embroidery, and sculptural works.
This book is a re-edited compilation of issues 1 through 5 of Koretsune’s self-published zine Ordinary Whales. Each issue gathers stories and cultural practices related to whales that she encountered during her fieldwork in places like Tohoku and Alaska, accompanied by her intricate embroidery pieces.
The smell of whales carried on the wind, deep-fried karintō made with whale oil, stone monuments venerating whales as deities, whaling ships once symbols of their towns, drums made from whale intestines and walrus tusks, dances predicting the success of a hunt, traditional whaling boats hand-carved by a grandfather, and kimono adorned with whales to celebrate a bountiful catch—
These are stories of ordinary whales woven into everyday life across places like Abashiri, Ishinomaki, the Miura Peninsula, Wakayama, and Alaska.
Seen through the quiet but resilient lives of people in these communities, the image of the whale that emerges here is distinct from sweeping historical narratives, debates over the ethics of whaling, or surreal depictions of the “super whale.” It is something more grounded, more human.
Just as scattered scraps of fabric can be stitched together, embroidered, and transformed into something beautiful, perhaps we can also gather the fragmented and sometimes contentious stories surrounding whales, and reimagine their image.

1986年広島県生まれ。広島県拠点。
2010年アラスカ大学フェアバンクス校卒業。在学中はネイティブ・アート、絵画、彫刻を学ぶ。2017年東北芸術工科大学大学院修士課程修了。国内外各地の鯨類と人の関わりや海のフォークロアをフィールドワークを通して探り、エッセイや詩のリトルプレス、刺繡作品として発表する。リトルプレス『ありふれたくじら』主宰。2018年〜2021年、東北大学東北アジア研究センター災害人文学ユニット学術研究員。2022年〜2023年、文化庁新進芸術家海外研修制度・研修員としてノルウェーに滞在し、オスロ大学文化研究・東洋言語学科の研究プロジェクト「Whales of Power」に客員研究員として参加。2025年、国際芸術祭「あいち2025」に参加。

Sakura Koretsune
Sakura Koretsune was born in 1986 in Hiroshima, Japan. She is based in Hiroshima, Japan.Koretsune obtained a BFA in painting from University of Alaska Fairbanks, also studying native arts and sculpture. In 2017, she received a master’s degree from Tohoku University of Art and Design in Yamagata. Whale-human relationships and the folklore of oceans inspire her works. She writes and embroiders to express her journeys and imagination based on research and fieldwork. She continuously publishes a booklet series, “Ordinary Whales.” Koretsune worked as a researcher at the Center for Northeast Asian Studies of Tohoku University from 2018 to 2020. From 2022 to 2023, she was a guest researcher in the “Whales of Power” research project at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages of the University of Oslo as a trainee under the Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists organized by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs.
