This collection includes works depicting scenes with cars from all over the world, old and new, from famous cars to popular cars, such as Volvo 240, Cadillac Eldorado, Nissan Pao, Datsun Fairlady, and Toyota Crown.
免許をとったばかりの18歳の夏、父親の車を借りて、友人たちと夜の海へ向かった。砂浜で花火に興じ、車の中で語らいながら、朝日が昇るのを待った。水平線が光に照らされたとき、少しだけ自分が大人になった気がした。
20世紀、大衆車の普及によって私たちの日常は大きく変化した。それは、私たちを時刻表から解放し（来るかどうかわからないバスを待ったり、電車の出発時間に併せて行動を制約されることもない）、身体能力を超えた移動を可能にした（まだ見ぬ景色を求めて、何十倍もの速さで）。

車という力強い相棒が可能にしてくれたのは、“ここ”からのエスケープ。その気になれば、どこへでも行ける。ミラー越しに、通り過ぎた風景を見やる。置いてきた過去の自分を振りほどくように、アクセルを踏む。
箕輪麻紀子が描いた様々な国や時代の車のある風景は、人と車のいくつもの物語を想起させる。彼らはどこへ行くのか、どこから戻って来たのか。ぴかぴかに磨かれた車もあれば、走れば十分、とでもいうようなボロボロの車もある。定められた行き先を持たず彷徨ったり、夜中に恋人のもとへ超特急で駆け付けたり、自由を手に入れた男たちもいれば、自分の意志とは関係なく変わっていく車窓の景色を不満気に眺める少女もいる。
今日では、AIの技術を利用した自動運転システムが実用化に向けて進められ、さらに空飛ぶ自動車の研究も進んでいるという。私たちが自分でハンドルを握る自動車の時代は終わりに近づいている。それが現実のものとなれば、車と私たちの関係は今とは全く違ったものになるのだろう。ここに描かれたような“車のある風景”が記憶や物語の中を住処にするようになるのは、そんなに遠いことではないのかもしれない。
In the summer when I was 18 years old and had just gotten my driver’s license, I borrowed my father’s car and headed to the beach at night with my friends. We enjoyed fireworks on the beach, talked in the car, and waited for the sun to rise. When the horizon was illuminated by the light, I felt that I had grown up a little.
In the 20th century, our daily lives changed drastically with the spread of mass-market cars. It freed us from timetables (no more waiting for a bus that may or may not come, no more restricting our activities to the departure time of a train), and enabled us to move beyond our physical capabilities (dozens of times faster in search of yet unseen scenery).

My powerful partner, the car, made it possible for me to escape from “here”. If I wanted to, I could go anywhere. Through the mirror, I look at the scenery I’ve passed. I step on the gas pedal as if to shake off the past I left behind.
Makiko Minowa’s landscapes with cars from various countries and eras remind us of the many stories of people and cars. Where are they going, and where have they come back from? Some of the cars are shiny and polished, while others are battered, as if running is enough. There are men who have gained their freedom, wandering around without a fixed destination or rushing to their lover in the middle of the night on a super express, and there is a girl who watches the changing scenery of the car window with dissatisfaction, regardless of her own will.
Today, automated driving systems using AI technology are being developed for practical use, and research on flying cars is also underway. The era of cars in which we take the wheel ourselves is coming to an end. When this becomes a reality, our relationship with cars will be completely different from what it is now. It may not be long before “landscapes with cars” like the one depicted here come to make their home in our memories and stories.
